In response to criticism from some pro-Taiwan independence scholars who painted his policies on the cross-strait relations as "a beginning to challenge" the governing party's charter and platform, party presidential candidate Frank Hsieh yesterday said that his cross-strait polices are predicated on national security and not seeking unlimited opening of Taiwan to China as are the policies proposed by his KMT rival Ma Ying-jeou.

Almost a score of independence-leaning scholars yesterday presented a co-signed statement, which asks Hsieh to specify his China policies and urges the governing Democratic Progressive Party to draw up concrete policies towards relations with China.

The statement pointed out that Hsieh has recently released a series of China policies which he had not spelled out during his primary campaigning, such as changing the 40 percent cap placed upon Taiwan businesses' investment in China to case-by-case management, giving special pardons to businesses who sneaked out to China, and allowing local high-tech companies to transfer technology to China.

The statement said that as soon as his position as the party's presidential candidate was assured, Hsieh began to challenge the DPP's current China policies, which is worrisome.
