Patty: Wasn't today's science class interesting?
Simon: Yeah! Just think, even old people's bodies may be only fifteen years old! But I don't have any idea how...
Patty: Well, some scientists believe that by tracking 2 the age of carbon 3 -14 in our bodies' cells, we can figure out when these cells were created 4 .
Simon: And most organs 5 are made of cells produced in the last ten or fifteen years, right?
Patty: Right! Although you may think your whole body is aging 6 , most of it is in a state 7 of constant 8 change and regeneration 9 .
Simon: So, how do scientists explain why this regeneration doesn't continue forever?
Patty: Well, they say it could be due to DNA mutations 10 , mitochondria 11 DNA going unrepaired 12 , or stem 13 cells—which make new cells—actually aging themselves.
Simon: Very interesting, Patty. You're doing well in science!
Patty: Thanks. Now if only I could stop getting older....
