Joyce invites Brian to a fancy restaurant. She is so worried about the next lunch meeting with Ms. Hsu. She hopes that, while having dinner, Brian can give her some useful advice.
Brian:Un, wait a minute, Joyce. I know, for Japanese culture, drinking soup with a lot of noise represents that the soup tastes good. However, for westerners, it would be better to drink your soup without making all of those noises.
Joyce:Oops, sorry.
Joyce:
Brian:Moreover, if you need to leave your seat while eating, remember to put your knife on the right and your fork on the left. But if you have finished your meal, you can put both of them on the right.
Joyce:O.K. I got it. What about my napkin?
Joyce:
Brian:Just spread it on your knees. And while you leave your seat, just put it on the seat. It might spoil others' appetites if you put a stained napkin on the table.
Joyce:That's right.
Joyce:
Brian:As for drinking your coffee or tea after meal, there are several things you might keep in mind. You can add some sugar in your drink and stir it with the teaspoon. Yet, it would be improper to drink it with a tiny teaspoon.
Joyce:I will remember that. Oh, there's one more question. Where should I put the teaspoon afterward?
Brian:Your teaspoon should remain on the plate. Not in the cup, but on the plate.
Joyce:Thank you for teaching me so many things, Brian. I really appreciate it.
Joyce:Brian,
Brian:Don't mention it. However, you can buy me supper tomorrow, if you insist.
