It sounds like a headline from the spoof newspaper The Onion, but for physicists, this is actually an achievement: Two teams have stored nothing in a puff of gas and then retrieved it a split second later. Storing a strange form of vacuum builds on previous efforts in which researchers stopped light in its tracks (ScienceNOW, 22 January 2001) and may mark a significant step toward new quantum information and telecommunication technologies.

Long-term effects of low-level pollution may have been underestimated.
Nitrogen emitted into the atmosphere as a result of human activity could be changing plant communities worldwide. Although hot spots of high nitrogen pollution are known to change plant dynamics, new work predicts substantial effects from the lower, chronic levels of pollution found throughout most of the world.

In response to criticism from some pro-Taiwan independence scholars who painted his policies on the cross-strait relations as "a beginning to challenge" the governing party's charter and platform, party presidential candidate Frank Hsieh yesterday said that his cross-strait polices are predicated on national security and not seeking unlimited opening of Taiwan to China as are the policies proposed by his KMT rival Ma Ying-jeou.

Dao Duy Dang remembers the night in 1963 when the lights came on in Uong Bi. "People were so excited," the 70-year-old tea-shop owner says, recalling the cheers that rang through the northern Vietnamese town after one of the country's first coal-fired power plants began operating. "Their whole lives they had wished for electricity." Be careful what you wish for. Soon after the plant opened, Dang's wife developed a cough from the thick black smoke from the power plant that hung over the town. His children had near-constant runny noses and neighbors reported other nagging health problems. When Vietnam's government announced plans to add a second coal-fired generator in 2005, villagers didn't celebrate. "The people cried out," Dang says.

After pioneering software that allows people to explore Earth in unprecedented detail, Google set its sights on mapping the moon. Now the popular Internet search engine wants to help send a robot there. Yesterday, the Mountain View, California-based company announced that it will sponsor a $30 million prize for the first privately funded lunar robotic rover.

Faced with a damning list of a dozen violations in its biosafety labs, the president of Texas A&M University (TAMU) in College Station vowed today to correct the lapses, which range from unreported toxin exposures to improper protective gear. In a news conference, interim president Edward Davis also noted that any school subjected to the same scrutiny as TAMU "would probably have findings" revealing biosafety violations.

Gas giant's role in preventing asteroid collisions under scrutiny.
For more than a decade many astronomers have thought of Jupiter as a protective big brother for planet Earth. The gas giant's gravitational pull is believed to slingshot incoming Earth-threatening objects out of the Solar System. This has led many to suppose it shielded the young Earth from impacts, helping to support conditions for life.
But now, a preliminary study indicates that Earth would have done just as well, if not better — in at least one regard - without Jupiter's help.

Vivian Wai-yin Kwok, 07.04.07, 4:09 AM ET
HONG KONG -
For Chrysler’s incoming owners, the price apparently looks right. Seeking to recover lost ground quickly in the small car market, the struggling automaker is going ahead with plans to market a Chinese-made vehicle in the U.S. that should sell for significantly less than Chrysler's current cheapest model.
