Unit 2 The Day Of The Dead

On October 30th—the day before Halloween1...

Ricardo: Tomorrow is the beginning of Dia de los Muertos!

Maria: I'm sorry, what?

Ricardo: It means, "The Day of the Dead" in Spanish2!

Maria: So, what is it? I mean, it sounds like some kind of morbid3 adaptation4 of Halloween.

Ricardo: Actually, it's a much older tradition than the Halloween we celebrate today. In Mexico, people have been celebrating this day since 1800 B.C.E.

Maria: So there must be more meaning to it than those silly5 activities we practice on Halloween.

Ricardo: You're right. And something you should keep in mind is this—it is not a sad celebration6—it's a three-day festival of happiness during which Mexicans honor7 their loved ones. It is also a time to reflect8 on the cycle9 of life.

Maria: Wow, you seem quite taken with this topic10! Perhaps you could elaborate11 over a cup of coffee with me later.

Ricardo: I would love to!

Maria: Great! I'm looking forward to it!
