‧故事內容：

有隻公雞在幫自己還有母雞扒開泥土找尋食物的時候 （A Cock, scratching for food for himself and his hens,），發現了ㄧ顆寶石 （found a precious stone）。他對寶石說 （on which he said）：「如果是你的主人，而不是我發現了你 （If your owner had found thee, and not I,），他一定會把你拿起 （he would have taken thee up），視為珍寶（and have set thee in thy first estate）。可你對我ㄧ點用處都沒有 （but I have found thee for no purpose），我寧願要一顆大麥（I would rather have one barleycorn），也不要世界上所有的寶石 （than all the jewels in the world）。」
