有隻公雞在幫自己還有母雞扒開泥土找尋食物的時候 (A Cock, scratching for food for himself and his hens,),發現了ㄧ顆寶石 (found a precious stone)。他對寶石說 (on which he said):「如果是你的主人,而不是我發現了你 (If your owner had found thee, and not I,),他一定會把你拿起 (he would have taken thee up),視為珍寶(and have set thee in thy first estate)。可你對我ㄧ點用處都沒有 (but I have found thee for no purpose),我寧願要一顆大麥(I would rather have one barleycorn),也不要世界上所有的寶石 (than all the jewels in the world)。」
