Dan: Well, I'm just curious to see what's out there. I'm getting bored with my job and I'd like to find a job with a higher salary and better benefits.
Dan：嗯，我只是好奇想看看外面的世界有什麼。我對我的工作感到有點厭煩了，我想要找一份高薪一點、福利也比較好的工作。

Cindy: Have you tried searching for jobs on the net? I don't think that the newspaper is a good place to search for jobs.

Dan: You're right. I'll surf the net tonight when I get home.
Dan：你說的對。我今晚回家以後會上網看看。

Cindy: Have you ever searched on jobhunt.com? A lot of my friends have found jobs from that Web site.
Cindy：你有搜尋過 jobhunt.com 嗎？我有很多的朋友是從那個網站找到工作的。

Dan: No, I've never heard of that site before. I'll write it down and check it later tonight. Thanks a lot!

　　Most of the time, mothers work hard all year round and are rewarded for it with only a single day of relaxation. With the celebration of Mother's Day in May, National Geographic Channel is showing one of its all-time favorites, In the Womb. This month, In the Womb's latest show focuses on multiple births in Twins, Triplets1, and Quads2. Many people have at least one brother or sister, but only a small amount have siblings3 that are twins, triplets, or quadruplets.

　　This series goes deep into the womb and answers numerous questions that have been on the mind of scientists for years. Do twins hold hands in the womb? If one twin pushes, will the other push back? If so, does this bullying4 carry over into their childhood? Scientists now believe that twins interact while in the womb. Sometimes they kick, push, and even play and kiss. In the womb is where these children bond and their behavior for the rest of their lives is formed.

退休與面試新人 (面試的後續)

Brad and Laura are taking their coffee break together. They are having a friendly chat about the interviews that Laura conducted earlier that morning.
Brad 和 Laura 正一起在休息。他們在談論有關 Laura 早上進行的面談。

Brad: So, how did the interviews go this morning? Did you find any suitable candidates?

Laura: I interviewed a lot of people who were very qualified for the positions. I'll make my final decisions by the end of the week.

Brad: Yes, he went to Harvard. He studied and lived in the US for many years. That's why his English is so good.

Laura: Oh, I remember now. He also has a lot of work experience. I was thinking about inviting him for a second interview. He is definitely a top candidate.

Brad: Well, his resume is really impressive. He showed it to me before he faxed it to you.

Universal Studios Hollywood — a place for fun, entertainment, and even history — is taking its first steps in a 25-year plan to expand the park. The new outline envisions an incredible growth of the amusement facilities as well as the development of a residential neighborhood in the area. This environmentally friendly living area is just another feather in the cap of this amazing park of wonder.

Originally known as Universal City, Universal Studios Hollywood was founded in 1915 by Carl Laemmle. It was the first studio to offer tours where audiences could watch films in production. Since then, Universal Studios has grown to include theme parks, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, and much more. This park proved to be so popular that Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, and last year, Universal Studios Japan (Osaka) celebrated its fifth birthday.

With so much past success from growth, it's no wonder that Universal is excited about its latest plans for expansion. Previous plans were scrapped due to complex zoning and environmental regulations. Now, they are ready to move ahead in full force.

While many new attractions are in the works for the new expansion, Universal will preserve some of its old attractions, such as the Bates Mansion from the film Psycho and the mechanical shark from Jaws. These attractions offer a historical perspective of the film industry. Preserving them illustrates the advance in film production techniques over the years. In addition to safeguarding the past, plenty of new high-tech soundstages, rides, and theaters are in the works. In May, Citywalk, a shopping, dining, and entertainment facility, began remodeling. Spring also saw the opening of SkyVenture Hollywood, an attraction where visitors can float 40 feet into the air on 125 mph winds. Not bad for a studio once called, "The strangest place on Earth."

How often do you eat meat? Do you recycle? Do you drive a car? Depending upon your answers, you may have a big or small ecological footprint. An ecological what? Of course we all have footprints. We leave them in the mud or after stepping in a puddle, but the ecological footprints that we leave on the Earth are far more important.

By looking at one's ecological footprints, we can see how much a person impacts our planet Earth. The things one does, the products one uses, and how one consumes natural resources are part of that person's ecological footprint. Let's say you eat meat and a lot of processed food every day. You also ride a scooter to work and never recycle. These things amount to having a big ecological footprint. On the contrary, a vegetarian who rides a bike everywhere and recycles everything would have a much smaller ecological footprint. In other words, this person's life doesn't hurt the environment as much as your own. Now, what do you do if you have a big footprint?

      Finding the perfect gift for dear old dad can be difficult. You don't want to get him anything too old-fashioned, and you don't want to waste your money buying something that's too young or hip1. As a result, you end up getting him a tie2. When he unwraps the gift, he smiles and adds it to his growing collection of ties. This simple yet elegant gift of a strip3 of fabric4 has a history that dates back further than the first Father's Day.

　　As many great things have come from Asia, the same is true for ties. The first-known ties were found in the grave of Qin Shi Huang in 1974. He had planned to have his army buried along with him, but was finally talked out of it. He decided to replace these soldiers with ones made of terracotta5 instead. Around each of these statues' necks was a small piece of cloth. This discovery shows not only that ties have been around since 210 BC, but also that some fathers had been trying to get rid of their ugly ties even in ancient times.

Patty gets on the phone with her lawyer right away and tells him what happened.
James：I warned you about this guy. I said the deal was too good to be true.
Patty：I know. I'm a fool. Is there anything I can do?
James： Either do the deal his way or threaten to sue him. But he'll probably know that you're only bluffing.
Patty：I think I will just tell him off. I'm going to burn my bridges, but at least I'll feel much better.

佩蒂馬上跟她的律師通電話，告訴他發生了什麼事。
詹姆士：我已經警告妳要小心這個人。我早說這項交易划算到不像真的。

It all started in the 1880s, when groups of students at Princeton University football games would chant, "Rah, rah, rah! Tiger! Tiger! Tiger! Sis, sis, sis! Boom, boom, boom, aah!" to encourage team support and school spirit. The actual term "cheerleader" was initiated a few years later in 1898, when Johnny Campbell of the University of Minnesota _(1)_ a crowd of students in an organized chant. Cheerleading quickly became a popular activity, with well-known figures such as _(2)_ American presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower joining in the fun. Indeed, the first cheerleaders were male, and in fact, women only started to get seriously involved _(3)_ cheerleading during the mid-20th century.

Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer, the founder of the National Cheerleader's Association, can be credited with transforming cheerleading _(4)_ the sport it is today. In 1948, he held a camp for 52 young women _(5)_ in cheerleading. He also created cheerleader uniforms as well as popularized the use of pom-poms. The trend spread to American high schools and in 1978, the first cheerleading competitions _(6)_. Now there are over 3.5 million cheerleaders in the world.

Interestingly _(7)_, in today's world of cheerleading, actual chants are few and far between. The routines more often include dance, gymnastics, pyramid building, and basket tosses. In the 1930s, actresses on the silver screen looked elegant and sophisticated. What was the finishing touch to their look that made women across the Western world wish to imitate them? It was the perfect polish on their long fingernails.

Manicuring and painting nails is not a new thing. The first known instances of nail care date back to China in 3000 BC when members of the royal family used a mixture of silver, gold, egg whites, and beeswax to color and protect their nails. The paint used on fingernails in the 1930s and today, however, was actually made possible as a result of innovations in the automotive paint industry.

The cosmetics company Revlon was started in 1932. Its founders used nail polishes that were pigment-based instead of dyes, and they had polishes available in a variety of colors. Up until that point, nail polish was only available in various shades of red. Revlon also brought in vogue the idea of matching nail and lip color.

During the first half of the 20th century, men would receive manicures along with a haircut, shave, and shoeshine in a package deal. Over time, manicures for men went out of fashion. Yet, in the 1990's, men once again started to care about the appearance of their nails. Now, men and women alike can be seen in nail salons getting their nails cleaned, trimmed, polished, and even painted. From natural to acrylic, fingernails come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Getting a manicure is one way to pamper yourself and look well kept without breaking the bank.

Meditation is an exercise in quieting the mind. Meditation can help restore mental balance leading to a feeling of happiness and contentment.

Think of the brain as a faucet where the water is constantly flowing. The flowing "water" is our thoughts about such things as the never-ending list of tasks that we have to do, should do, didn't do, and might do. Stopping the flow of these thoughts and slowing down the mind is the goal of meditation. By turning off the faucet, a person who practices meditation can attain clearer thinking, improved health, and a greater understanding of their own goals.

When one first sits down to meditate, it may seem as though one's mind is racing at 100 miles a minute. One thinks of the report that needs to be turned in, the dishes that haven't been done, and the countless other problems in life that unconsciously stream in. This is because when meditating, one finally realizes how active the mind actually is. The focus must then be taken away from these thoughts and centered instead on breathing in deeply through the nostrils and out through the mouth. Although it seems simple to "just breathe," in reality, it is easier said than done. Blocking out external thoughts takes a great deal of effort. By sitting in an upright position with legs folded and thumbs just barely touching the index fingers, meditation can bring relaxation and inner peace. All thoughts of the things that should, could, and would be fade away as the mind is quieted.
