(In the car)
Jeff: There’s Carrefour! Let’s stop. The weather’s been killing me. I think it’s time to get an air conditioner for the study. Plus it’s their anniversary sale.
Anna: Great idea. That way I can go get some watermelon and cherries. I would do anything for some fresh fruit.
(At the service counter)
Jeff: We can apply for a member’s card over here. Oh my gosh! Look at that line. Do you think it’s worth the wait?
Anna: Of course. With a member’s card we can get a ton of discounts. Besides, we’re not pressed for time.
(Twenty minutes later)
Clerk: May I help you?
Anna: Yeah, we’re like to apply for a member’s card.
Clerk: Great! All you need to do is fill out this form and sign here. Plus I’ll need two forms of ID.
Anna: I’ll take care of the form while you get a shopping cart.
Jeff: Why should I get the cart? I’m tired; I’ve been driving all morning.
Anna: Jeff, you’re the least romantic person I’ve ever met. Fine, I’ll get it. You do the form.

Marcus: The news said it's going to be a super-typhoon. I'm glad to be back home and not outside in all that wind and rain.
Tina: It's a good thing we bought supplies to be prepared for a power-outage. Where are the lighters you got?
Marcus: You were supposed to get the lighters. I got candles.
Tina: No. I was supposed to get candles, and you were supposed to get the lighters.
Marcus: What are we going to do if the lights go out?

Unit 4 Pass On Profanity 1

Mrs. Chen : Rick, I don't approve 2 of the kind of language you used in class on Monday.

Rick : I'm sorry, Mrs. Chen, but everyone I know talks like that.

Mrs. Chen : Maybe, but not in my class. I'm hoping you learned something from the supplemental 3 homework page 4 on the Apache Indians I assigned 5 you to read.

Rick : In fact, I did. It is said* that many Apaches face the sun in the morning and sing a song of thanks to the Creator 6 for the love between a man and a woman.
Mrs. Chen : That's right, and for that reason the Apaches never make jokes about sex. They equate 7 that with taking God's name in vain.

Rick : It's hard to believe their language has no bad words at all. I guess there's a certain dignity 8 about that.

Mrs. Chen : I agree. So Rick, at least in my class, I expect 9 next time you'll pass on the profanity.

Unit 2 The Day Of The Dead

On October 30th—the day before Halloween1...

Ricardo: Tomorrow is the beginning of Dia de los Muertos!

Maria: I'm sorry, what?

Ricardo: It means, "The Day of the Dead" in Spanish2!

Maria: So, what is it? I mean, it sounds like some kind of morbid3 adaptation4 of Halloween.

Ricardo: Actually, it's a much older tradition than the Halloween we celebrate today. In Mexico, people have been celebrating this day since 1800 B.C.E.

Maria: So there must be more meaning to it than those silly5 activities we practice on Halloween.

Ricardo: You're right. And something you should keep in mind is this—it is not a sad celebration6—it's a three-day festival of happiness during which Mexicans honor7 their loved ones. It is also a time to reflect8 on the cycle9 of life.

Maria: Wow, you seem quite taken with this topic10! Perhaps you could elaborate11 over a cup of coffee with me later.

Ricardo: I would love to!

Maria: Great! I'm looking forward to it!
